SONCAP vs. MANCAP
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) sets and enforces quality standards for products sold in Nigeria, both imported and locally manufactured.
SONCAP is a mandatory pre-shipment verification scheme for imported products, confirmed via a Product Certificate and a per-shipment SONCAP Certificate issued by SON-accredited firms abroad.
MANCAP is the equivalent scheme for goods manufactured inside Nigeria, certifying your local production process and finished product.

What's the difference between SONCAP and MANCAP?
SONCAP applies to products imported into Nigeria and is verified before shipment. MANCAP applies to products manufactured inside Nigeria and certifies the local production process and finished goods directly.
Do I need SON certification if my product already has NAFDAC approval?
They cover different things. NAFDAC regulates food, drugs, cosmetics, and similar products. SON regulates general product quality and technical standards across a much wider range of goods. Some products may need both.
What happens if I import goods without a SONCAP certificate?
Nigerian customs can detain the shipment, require testing, or in some cases order destruction of the goods at the importer's cost, and clearance will be held up regardless.
How long does SONCAP certification take?
It depends on the product category and the accredited inspection firm used in the exporting country, since the Product Certificate must be secured before the shipment-specific certificate can be issued.
