How WhatsApp Business API Pricing Works
- You pay for each delivered template message, not per conversation. Meta switched to this model in July 2025.
- Marketing templates (promotions, broadcasts, newsletters) are always charged and cost the most.
- Utility templates (order updates, reminders, receipts) are free inside an open 24-hour customer service window and charged outside it.
- Authentication templates (one-time codes) are charged for each message.
- Your normal replies to a customer inside the 24-hour window are free.
- Customers who reach you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad open a 72-hour window in which all your messages are free.
- Meta bills in US dollars and can change rates on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October.

A separate charge applies only to general-purpose AI assistant providers in certain countries, and Nigeria is not on that list. If your bill shows charges for replies, tick Count my replies as paid in the calculator and check your Meta billing.
Utility messages relate to something the customer did or asked for, such as an order confirmation, delivery update or appointment reminder. Marketing messages promote something, such as a sale or new product. Meta decides the category when it approves your template, and marketing messages cost several times more.
Send updates while the customer's 24-hour window is open, use utility templates for messages customers expect, send promotions only to interested segments, and use Click-to-WhatsApp ads, which open a 72-hour free window.
It depends on the message type. At current estimates, a utility or authentication message costs roughly ₦10 to ₦20, against about ₦6 to ₦7 for one SMS page, and marketing messages cost far more. But replies inside the 24-hour window are free on WhatsApp, and messages can include buttons, images and payment links.
No. Meta bills the WhatsApp Business Platform in US dollars for Nigerian businesses, so your naira cost moves with the exchange rate. Some providers bill you in naira and add their own fee.
